Adorning The Dark

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

Andrew Peterson, writer of the Wingfeather Saga and acclaimed singer-songwriter, shares his insights into the creative process in winsome fashion in his book Adorning The Dark. It’s a wonderful read as Peterson takes his readers through his own journey as an artist. He explores the lessons he has learned about the creative endeavor and the importance of community for an artist’s work. In a conversational manner Peterson invites the reader into his life, unveiling his anxieties and fears, as he points to every Christians identity as beloved sons and daughters of the King of all creation. As Peterson writes: we have no need to find meaning anywhere else but in the arms of our heavenly Father.

Reading through Adorning The Dark, I was comforted as Peterson shared his mistakes, and his willingness to keep making them, in the pursuit of creating something beautiful; I was challenged to try as best I can to capture a piece of the Good Old Story in all my creative endeavors; I was pointed time and time again to the reason why I should be creating anything at all: for the glory of my Maker, Redeemer, and Sustainer.

I would suggest this book to anyone who seeks to foster beauty in their life, whether or not they identify as a creative. We all have the ability to make something beautiful with the life God has given us.
